Dispersal of Ashgrove Shorthorns

An excellent day was had at Ashgrove Farm in Llawhaden to disperse the superb organic Ashgrove Shorthorn and Llwynon Friesian herds for the Llewellyn Family. With an already solid conventional dairy trade in West Wales the addition of PWAB registered Organic status and a very rare opportunity to purchase top quality pedigree Shorthorn cows were all reasons for a potentially red hot trade and we were not disappointed. Cows were sold locally and the quality had also drawn buyers from England and Northern Ireland.

The Shorthorns dominated the leading prices with the top 10% achieving prices of £2000 or more and the next 10% all over £1700. Top price of the day was a whopping £2700 for one of the cover girls and the Llewellyn’s favourite cow. She was Ashgrove Butterbur 10 EX91, a 4th calf, 5th generation VG, Excellent bred back to the Butterburs of the great Rodway herd. She joined another top herd going to the Gelli Herd of I & E Harries. Another great family was the Red Rose line and the VG85 Ashgrove Red Rose 18 followed Butterbur 10 to the Gelli Herd at £2350.

Also at £2350 was Ashgrove Marie 20 VG88, a super red & white 2nd calver that caught the eye of Mr Malkin from Staffordshire. He added 4 new cows in all to his Cotwalton Herd also including Ashgrove Red Rose 21 VG87 and Ashgrove Butterbur 9 EX91 both at £2000. The quality of the cows was made very clear by the top breeders that were there to buy. With two already joining the Gelli Herd another noted herd within the breed, the Drisgol herd, took home Ashgrove Marie 19 VG85 at £2100.

The calves and yearlings were also in good demand and with a top price of £1350 for the 14 month old heifer Ashgrove Bacculum Lass 7 by Rodway Prince whos full sister Bacculum Lass 8, at 3 months, sold for £540 and both went to Davies Penralltddu, Pontfaen. Out of 41 calves 22 will make the trip across the Irish sea to start a herd for the future for David Mccaughey of County Antrim.

Averages:
